Being a transparency

From the July 2025 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A clear transparency—for example, a window—allows light to pass through so what we’re looking at is completely visible; there is no haziness, no impurity. In Christianity, you might think of Christ Jesus as a transparency for God. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12), and as the book of First John records, “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all” (1:5). Jesus fully reflected God’s light.

Through the power of God, Jesus was able to overcome material limitations and heal those who were receptive. He acknowledged God as his Father and the source of his ability and taught others how to heal through prayer as he did (see, for example, John 5:30 and Luke 10:17).

When Jesus prayed, he did not ask for material things. His prayers acknowledged God as the one perfect source of all good, supplying every need. Jesus also acknowledged his oneness, his unity, with God. He refuted all suggestions or temptations that would deny these spiritual facts; “Get thee behind me, Satan,” he was recorded as saying (Luke 4:8). Jesus’ consecrated prayers made him a transparency for God, divine Mind. By following Jesus’ example, people today can understand God as their true source and let the light of God shine in their lives, too.
