A few years ago, my son and I had driven downtown to watch some fireworks, when suddenly I became ill. My son suggested that we go home, and on the way he asked that I go to the hospital; based on the symptoms I was displaying, he was certain I was having a heart attack. I assured him that I would be fine and would be seeking Christian Science treatment, and asked that we go home.
When we arrived home, I called a Christian Science practitioner while I gathered my Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, as well as the Christian Science periodicals, to read and pray with as I rested. During that night my son checked on me several times to make sure I was all right. There had been progress, and by morning I felt much better. I called the practitioner to thank her for her support, but later that day the symptoms returned and I felt I should stay close to home.
I thought of reading a favorite article of mine on Christian Science, but I had been reading the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy, and I remembered that in Article IV, Section 1, it specifies (referring to applicants for membership in The Mother Church) that “the Bible, together with Science and Health and other works by Mrs. Eddy, shall be his only textbooks for self-instruction in Christian Science, and for teaching and practising metaphysical healing.”
