Before you make a batch of coconut swirls or prepare a crème fraîche, you locate what you hope is a foolproof recipe in a cookbook or online, or on a TV cooking show. Then you gather together the ingredients and measure out the quantities needed. Otherwise, your baking or cooking efforts might not be successful.
Cookbooks today are still among the top genre of books sold, popular for their beauty as well as their practicality. But I’ve always been impressed that no book of any genre has ever topped the sale of the Holy Bible. Why does the demand for this book surpass that of every other, year after year? Surely an important reason is that in the pages of the Bible lies the meaning of life itself, the truth about God and His creation, man and the universe.
Stories in the Bible are of men and women who, although they lived many centuries ago, had many experiences similar to our own. As we ponder what to do about relationships with family, conflicts over money, issues concerning honesty and loyalty, the Bible is a guidebook to finding wisdom, comfort, hope, peace of mind, and inspiration. And, most important, it also helps those who are fully receptive to the truth it contains learn how to heal as the prophets and Jesus healed.
