Why...?

I have given the name to all the Christian Science periodicals. The first was The Christian Science Journal, designed to put on record the divine Science of Truth; the second I entitled Sentinel, intended to hold guard over Truth, Life, and Love; the third, Der Herold der Christian Science, to proclaim the universal activity and availability of Truth; the next I named Monitor, to spread undivided the Science that operates unspent. The object of the Monitor is to injure no man, but to bless all mankind.

—Mary Baker Eddy, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 353

Why read and pray with The Christian Science Monitor?

From the October 2017 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Christian Science Monitor is one of the family of four Christian Science periodicals established by Mary Baker Eddy to bring the healing message of Christian Science to all people. It complements and furthers the mission of the other three by presenting news honestly and fairly, which lifts the thoughts of readers and leads them to pray about issues in the world.

When I read the Monitor, rather than feeling outrage or indifference about what’s happening, I find myself thinking differently. My heart softens. I’m impelled to care, to consider other viewpoints and the possible solutions the Monitor uncovers. I’m moved to pray for the world.

Affecting readers in this way has everything to do with the Monitor’s objective: “to injure no man, but to bless all mankind.” Because the Monitor is founded on this basis of blessing, each report encourages the qualities of compassion and alertness that not only bless the reader, but promote effectual prayers that embrace the whole of humanity—every person, regardless of the languages they speak or where they are in the world.
