“I’m sorry to tell you this,” the obstetrician said, “but I am not sure that either you or your baby will make it.” Those were not the words I was expecting as I lay on the exam table at the hospital. I’d had a natural childbirth with my other two children with no complications. I was expecting the same for this precious baby. But I was told that the baby was breech and was too far into the birth canal for a Caesarean section.
The doctor left the room, and I asked the nurse to tell my husband to call the Christian Science practitioner who was prayerfully supporting the birth. I knew it was important to dispel all fear. I was quickly able to do that because I knew this baby was a loved child of God. God would never, and could never, bring harm to His child. As I lay there on the table, I prayerfully cherished the spiritual qualities that every child of God, including this child, expresses—qualities such as peace, harmony, health, and joy.
I also knew that God, Spirit, was the child’s only creator, as stated in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy: “The creative Principle—Life, Truth, and Love—is God. The universe reflects God. There is but one creator and one creation. This creation consists of the unfolding of spiritual ideas and their identities, which are embraced in the infinite Mind and forever reflected. These ideas range from the infinitesimal to infinity, and the highest ideas are the sons and daughters of God” (pp. 502–503).
