From suffering and self-pity to healing

From the February 2017 issue of The Christian Science Journal

This is adapted from a testimony originally posted during The Mother Church’s online Wednesday testimony meeting.

I’m so grateful for a recent healing I had. I was visiting the city on a very hot day, and I had to walk about a mile to my destination. To make matters worse, I had a severe headache. I began to feel sorry for myself and noticed how uncomfortable other walkers seemed to be in the heat, too.

Then I stopped and thought, “Wait a minute. How should I be thinking about this situation?” And these lines from a hymn came to mind: “In atmosphere of Love divine, / We live, and move, and breathe” (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 144, adapt. © CSBD).

What a perfect reminder. I saw right then that I had a choice: I could focus on the suffering and self-pity, or reject that picture of discomfort and illness and instead pray to feel and see God’s loving presence right where I was.
