My mother was raised in Christian Science, and I attended a Christian Science Sunday School during my childhood years. But I didn’t “make it my own” until I was a young adult.
One day while playing bridge, the dominant subject of conversation became how a friend had been diagnosed with polio. Polio was a common topic, because its spread had reached epidemic proportions at that time, decades ago. Shortly afterward I started manifesting all the symptoms of the disease.
It quickly became clear to me that Christian Science had given me all the tools I needed to heal this illness. This thought from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy came to me: “Mind is the source of all movement, and there is no inertia to retard or check its perpetual and harmonious action” (p. 283). I realized that all movement comes from divine Mind, God, and as an idea of that same Mind, my expression of good could never be paralyzed.
