Swelling quickly dissipates

From the May 2021 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is long overdue for me to express my gratitude for the healing efficacy of Christian Science, and for all of the healings I have experienced and witnessed through the years. Having grown up in a home with parents who practiced this Science, I learned early on that when discord or inharmony of any kind presents itself, I can pray and rely on God’s unerring direction to guide me.

Recently, I had an opportunity to demonstrate this once again. Late one evening, I suddenly experienced a very strange sensation: my tongue, mouth, and hands began swelling rapidly. I immediately prayed, acknowledging God as the creator of all, who could not create an element or circumstance that is harmful. These words from the Christian Science textbook came to my thought almost instantly: “Be firm in your understanding that the divine Mind governs, and that in Science man reflects God’s government. Have no fear that matter can ache, swell, and be inflamed as the result of a law of any kind, when it is self-evident that matter can have no pain nor inflammation” (Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 393).

As the physical condition was rapidly intensifying, I felt it was important to have the prayer of a Christian Science practitioner—one who spiritually treats others with the expectation of healing. Since my speech was difficult to understand, I asked my husband to make the call to the practitioner for me. He lovingly agreed and explained the situation to her. Then he put the phone to my ear, and she immediately calmed my thought with the spiritual truths taught in Christian Science. She asked us to call her back in an hour, around ten o’clock in the evening.
