Moving house, but staying in the kingdom of God

From the July 2021 issue of The Christian Science Journal

My wife and I had enjoyed living in our home for nearly twenty years and had made many changes and improvements to it during that time. But we decided that we wanted to seek a fresh house in a more convenient area.

We realized that there were correct footsteps to be taken so that the house could be properly advertised and to ensure the legal affairs were in order. We also realized that there were spiritual considerations to moving house, and that came through understanding the difference between our house of bricks and mortar and a more uplifted view of home—our eternal home in the kingdom of heaven.

Referring to the fact that he had no permanent house, Jesus said, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head” (Luke 9:58). And referring to the spiritual home that he knew to be his and everyone’s, he said, “The kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:21).
