From childhood we learn to be obedient to our parents, our coaches, our teachers, and our employers. “Follow the rules!” we might hear them say.
Doing well in school is a matter of being obedient to the rules of conduct as well as to the academic rules of mathematics, grammar, and so forth. And practicing obedience when driving a vehicle is a matter of following the rules of the road, which keep us and others safe. Christian Science is no different in requiring obedience to rules, which bring good results for all, including healing.
In a Christian Science Sunday School—and later, at church—we learn that it is important to be obedient to the Golden Rule, the Ten Commandments, and Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in order to do the healing work that he asked of his followers. But sometimes we might feel that our capacity to obey the Golden Rule and other teachings is inadequate—that we don’t have enough virtue, strength, dominion, or intelligence to follow Jesus’ teachings.
