God and man are immaterial

From the September 2026 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science is the Science of Spirit and not of matter. It is the underlying reality Jesus proved throughout his whole ministry. The master Christian taught at the beginning of his career the fundamental truth that “God is Spirit,” and as such is incorporeal.

By defining God this way, Jesus undermined various beliefs of his day. The gods of the nations surrounding the Israelites were depicted in stone, gold, silver, brass, iron, and wood. Jesus’ teaching that God is Spirit presented the true idea of Deity.

This understanding of God as Spirit leads to an understanding of man as the image and likeness of Spirit. Since God can only express what God is, all the manifestations of God must be spiritual, not material.
