As a middle school science teacher and a student of Christian Science, I have had many opportunities to dispute the so-called laws of matter right in the midst of teaching my students about matter. Of course, this is done purely in thought! But then late last year, I was also able to demonstrate the powerlessness of these laws.
My students had been learning about the transfer of energy, and their final project was to build a roller coaster from random materials to show their knowledge. One group of students asked me to cut a PVC pipe for them, so I grabbed my box cutter (with a very sharp razor blade) to complete the task. Unfortunately, while I was slicing away at the plastic pipe, the blade slipped and I cut two of my fingers, one of them right to the bone and the other almost as deep.
The pain took my breath away, but I immediately started silently declaring that God was there and that I was protected. I made my way to the sink and cleaned the wounds under running water, and a student helped me bandage them.
