HUMANITY today is working to maintain what is often termed a state of well-being. Individuals strive for a normal state of health, a balanced budget, a secure and respected place in the community, and perhaps, most of all, for a congenial and happy relationship within the home.
SO powerful were the words of Christ Jesus in their effect upon the sick, the sinning, and even upon the dying that people said in amazement ( Luke 4:36 ), "What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out. " Jesus spoke as he was moved by the Word of God.
IN a world of contending mental forces, these words of Mary Baker Eddy on page 104 of "Miscellaneous Writings" point the way to protection, freedom, and peace: "Clothed, and in its right Mind, man's individuality is sinless, deathless, harmonious, eternal. " The understanding of man's God-given individuality provides effective defense against the aggressive mental influences so apparent in today's world.
MANY persons who are not yet students of Christian Science and some who have begun to study its teachings ask, "What constitutes a Christian Science treatment?" Unillumined human consciousness longs for a formula or ritual, but just as each idea in God, infinite divine Mind, is completely individual, so no formula or ritual could possibly comprehend the infinite ways in which divine Love meets the human need. Each treatment in Christian Science is an original prayer and never follows a formula.
A WOMAN , obviously disturbed in thought, telephoned a Christian Science practitioner, saying: "I need help. I have an upset stomach.
AT one time, when a loved one passed on, a young Christian Scientist was lifted instantaneously to a realization of Life eternal and intact, and her thought was exalted and at peace. A few days later, however, mesmeric suggestions of false sympathy brought a flood of self-pitying tears and the anguish of separation.
IN this day of multiplied forces and magnified fears, it is healing and comforting to refer to the great basic law of all real existence and its control as set forth in the Holy Scriptures. Christ Jesus referred to basic law in these terms ( Mark 12:29-31 ): "Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
THE Easter season points specifically to the climax of a life of humility, nobility, service, and grandeur—the life of Christ Jesus. No life such as his has this world witnessed before or since.
