"WATERS TO SWIM IN"

From the December 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THE prophet Ezekiel gives us in Chapter 47 a vivid account of his vision of the holy waters. He describes how his angel guide led him through waters that came first to the ankles, then to the knees. As Ezekiel and his guide continued on together, the waters reached to the loins, and finally we are told, "The waters were risen, waters to swim in." Here we have a graphic word picture of many a person's gradually deepening experience of the nature of God as Spirit.

Mankind generally consider their natural habitat to be land. Water is an entirely different element, one to be approached with due caution and trusted only in small degrees. Many people enjoy immersing themselves in it and navigating on it, but many feel more secure on terra firma.

Similarly, mankind have always felt at home in matter, believing it to be their natural habitat. Spirit is to the average individual somewhat nebulous. On page 350of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,"' Mary Baker Eddy, speaking of opponents of Christian Science, writes, "They think of matter as something and almost the only thing, and of the things which pertain to Spirit as next to nothing, or as very far removed from daily experience."
