MORAL COURAGE ESSENTIAL IN DEMONSTRATING CHRISTIAN CHARACTER

From the December 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IN our rapidly changing world, moral courage is very much needed, for to the physical sense of things there is no place of security, no guarantee of safety, no certainty of refuge. However, moral courage enables us to face calmly the most disturbing situations. This is indicated in the following passage from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 514): "Moral courage is 'the lion of the tribe of Juda,' the king of the mental realm. Free and fearless it roams in the forest. Undisturbed it lies in the open field, or rests in 'green pastures, . . . beside the still waters.'"

In the foregoing quotation the phrase, "the king of the mental realm," is an arresting one, for the status of a king implies that of a supreme monarch or ruler. With this meaning in thought, we may draw the helpful inference that when moral courage is coupled with spiritual sense in human consciousness, we shall realize freedom from fear and can confidently declare (Ps. 23:4), "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me."

The study of Christian Science fosters the development of moral courage, for this Science teaches that because God is All and God is good, there is nothing to fear, really. According to the first chapter of Genesis, God, Spirit, created all and called it good, and He governs His creation in perfect harmony.
