THE MONITOR, THE FRIEND OF ALL

From the December 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"THERE was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe" (John 1:6, 7). Christ Jesus, whose life and teachings are revered by all Christendom, manifested "the Light" proclaimed by John the Baptist. Faithfully demonstrating Spirit as God, healing sickness and sin and raising the dead, the Master was the embodiment of grace and truth.

In readying men's hearts for the reception of the Messiah, John took care to explain that "he was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light" (verse 8). John insisted that repentance and the baptism of the Holy Ghost must precede salvation, and he poetically alluded to himself as the friend of the bridegroom, in other words, as the one responsible for the success of the wedding event.

Christian Scientists understand that the bridegroom is spiritual understanding. The revelation of the Christ, Truth, came in this age through Mary Baker Eddy, whose life was dedicated from childhood to a search for the true nature of God. This final revelation of Deity, of spiritual man and spiritual universe, is clearly and fully stated by Mrs. Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."
