THE PROMISED COMFORTER

From the December 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

WE are living in an outstanding era of the world's history. It is the fulfillment of prophecy, the advent of the Comforter, and the fetters of materialism are dissolving before the might and majesty of Spirit.

Early in its history the Hebrew nation looked for the coming of the Messiah. In much of the Old Testament in differing language and in different degrees of clarity runs the prophecy of his coming. With the advent of Christ Jesus the first step of that promise was fulfilled, but he himself promised more. He foretold the coming of the Comforter and said to his disciples (John 16:12, 13): "I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth."

It is noteworthy that John alone recorded the promised Comforter. The writers of the other Gospels apparently did not see it. It is significant too that John became later known as the Revelator. It was he who revealed the impact of Jesus' teachings on the world and foresaw a new heaven and a new earth.
