Exploring in depth what Christian Science is and how it heals.

"KNOW THYSELF"

Mary Baker Eddy has made this thought-rousing statement in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" ( p. 571 ): "Know thyself, and God will supply the wisdom and the occasion for a victory over evil.

THE DIVINE IMPETUS

A Friend of the writer's, a student of Christian Science, who had been using and proving his new-found understanding of God, divine Principle, in his own experience for a number of years, decided that the time had come for him to identify himself publicly with the practice of Christian Science, and so he made application for a listing in The Christian Science Journal and took such additional action as seemed appropriate. Writing to his friend and teacher in Christian Science, who was one of the pioneers in our movement, the student informed him of the step which he had taken.

FINDING SUBSTANCE IN SPIRIT

As an understanding of Christian Science is obtained, any follower of its teachings comes to regard substance very differently from the way he did before. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy writes ( pp.

CONCERNING DISEASE AND REGENERATION

Recently the writer came across statistics which indicate that communicative diseases have greatly diminished in recent years but that degenerative diseases, such as arthritis, heart disease, and so on, have increased. From the standpoint of Christian Science, which teaches that God is good and infinite and that all that He creates is also good, disease has no scientific foundation, but is simply an erroneous belief, a misconception of mortal mind.

"LOVE ALONE IS LIFE"

There is perhaps no greater challenge to mankind and to the individual Christian Scientist than that of gaining a deeper and more practical understanding of divine Love. For there is no problem—economic, social, religious, political, or physical—that can prevail in the presence of Love understood and demonstrated.

CHRISTIAN SELF-DEFENSE

Christianity affords instruction and enlightenment in the practice of self-defense. This is of great value to everyone who at some time, in some way, has especial occasion to protect himself; and indeed is there anyone who does not have this necessity? At one time it may be the need to defend oneself against sickness, at another time against sin, at another time against some phase of injustice, at still another time the need may be to share in the defense of one's nation against attack or threatened attack.

WAYMARKS

The wise traveler when planning a journey learns all he can about the right way to proceed and equips himself with maps and specific directions to assure a safe arrival. If all these preparations are necessary in taking a human journey, how much more important it is properly to chart one's course in the journey from sense to Soul.

UNFOLDMENT

The unfoldment of spiritual ideas, universally understood in relation to divine Mind, would supply the needs of men and nations and establish peace for all mankind. In pondering the perishable and destructible nature of the physical universe, mankind through the ages have mournfully discoursed on the subject.

NO PERSONAL CONDEMNATION

When Mary Baker Eddy says in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" ( p. 249 ), "You may condemn evil in the abstract without harming any one or your own moral sense, but condemn persons seldom, if ever," she makes it clear that to forgo personal condemnation should be the high aim of every student of Christian Science.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE: PURE RELIGION

Ample proof of the correctness of Jesus' theology is found in the healings he brought about and in his conquest over sin, thus pointing the way of salvation. When the disciples of John the Baptist asked the Master if he was the Messiah who was to come according to prophecy, Jesus made no comment concerning his theology, but answered ( Matt.
