CHRISTIAN SELF-DEFENSE

From the August 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christianity affords instruction and enlightenment in the practice of self-defense. This is of great value to everyone who at some time, in some way, has especial occasion to protect himself; and indeed is there anyone who does not have this necessity? At one time it may be the need to defend oneself against sickness, at another time against sin, at another time against some phase of injustice, at still another time the need may be to share in the defense of one's nation against attack or threatened attack.

True Christianity is its own defense. The individual who strives to practice Christian precepts has the best possible basis for self-Protection Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p.387), "The history of Christianity furnishes sublime proofs of the supporting influence and protecting power bestowed on man by his heavenly Father, omnipotent Mind, who gives man faith and understanding whereby to defend himself, not only from temptation, but from bodily suffering."

Christian Science has brought to humanity the true understanding of God and of man in God's likeness. The power of Truth is mighty, yes, omnipotent, and eventually prevails. The extent to which this teaching has been accepted throughout the world, with its harmonizing, joy-bringing influence, is occasion for gratitude. The pressing need just now is to deepen our trust in omnipotent good and expand our utilization of this power.
