As Christian Scientists we often feel that we are walking on holy ground when we pause in humility to view the wisdom and Christly foresight our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, had in providing the Manual of The Mother Church to guide us in our human affairs. As church members we constantly look to the Manual for guidance in church government.
In "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" ( p. 60 ) we read that Mary Baker Eddy gave a Bible to a student "as a reward for the best paper on the spiritual significance of the first chapter of Genesis.
Just before being sent overseas during the Second World War, a young Christian Scientist talked to a Christian Science practitioner who had been his Sunday School teacher for several years. In discussing the experience the soldier was facing, the practitioner said to him, "Go wherever your duty calls you and do whatever is humanly necessary, but wherever you are—on a transport, in a bomber, during the midst of a battle—never enter into the illusion that hating, or any other evil, is real.
Every Christian Science treatment and every logical conclusion in the teaching of Christian Science is based on the fact stated so clearly by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" ( p. 262 ): "Divine Mind is the only cause or Principle of existence.
Christian Science teaches that true abundance characterizes the universal, indivisible ever-presence of God, good. Such abundance is spiritual.
Every clear and correct statement of eternal truth is a powerful statement. All of eternal truth is in and of God and manifests His power.
The spiritual facts of being are a present reality. Man's immortality and spirituality are actual because of his likeness to God.
The clock and the calendar are necessary for order in human affairs. It is likewise necessary, at times, to refer to what may have occurred many years ago or to what is likely to take place some time hence.
What marvelous spiritual good can be experienced in a single moment at the touch of divinity! According to the Scriptures, a woman pressed through a throng of people that surrounded the most Godlike man who ever lived, even Christ Jesus, and coming up behind him touched the hem of his garment. What must have been the feeling or sensation of that touch, and what were its effects? In a moment, even before the Master saw her, she who had been hopelessly ill for twelve years was instantly healed.
An airplane pilot who is cruising at a desired altitude must watch his instruments carefully to make certain that he is not losing height. One who is journeying Spiritward needs also to watch that he is not losing spiritual altitude.
