THE JOY OF REALIZATION

From the June 1951 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A Student of Christian Science who was soberly studying the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy was one day given the loving reminder by his teacher not only to do his metaphysical work regularly and earnestly, but to "have a good time doing it." This unusual advice awakened him at once to the realization of how necessary is the right attitude in the study of Christian Science.

Joyous realization of God's allness—not mere repetitious assertion—is what blesses and heals. And to experience this realization, one may, as a first step, know that since divine Mind is omniactive and All-in-all, "Mind is the source of all movement, and there is no inertia to retard or check its perpetual and harmonious action," as Mary Baker Eddy tells us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 283). Hypnotic suggestions of apathy, dullness, or sluggishness cannot enter where the activity of Mind is already infinite and ever present. Therefore consciousness, which is the reflection of this Mind, cannot slip into a sense of decline, blankness, or lack of inspiration. As one establishes his freedom to understand the spiritual truths which he is declaring, he sees these truths transforming his experience. Thus true demonstration unfolds in Christian Science.

It was this joy of discernment and buoyancy of thought which Mrs. Eddy experienced and which enabled her to bring so much healing to the world. She describes her watching and waiting for each new idea in these words (ibid., p. 109): "The search was sweet, calm, and buoyant with hope, not selfish nor depressing." For herself and for all she revealed man's oneness, as reflection, with Mind and his activity as always serene, progressive, and joyous.
