Through the omnipotent energies of Truth, ever active in human consciousness, individuals and nations are awakening to their need of that which is spiritually good and permanent; they are reaching out for that which will heal their self-inflicted wounds. The need is not being met through material systems, for these all operate from the basis of the fallible human mind, which is limited in its possibilities.
The history of the journey of the children of Israel out of Egyptian bondage, through the wilderness, and into the promised land, exemplifies the journey from a material to a spiritual sense of being, a mental journey, which all must eventually take. Sin, hate, fear, ignorance, ambition for material place and power, inevitably lead to sorrow, loss, disease, and failure, and all the suffering connected with bondage to material sense.
Throughout his eventful, successful career, Jesus preached and demonstrated the Christ, Truth, when he healed the sick, stilled the tempest, fed the multitudes, raised the dead. The Master also taught and demonstrated that an understanding of the Christ is a protection and defense against the adversary, and destroys sin.
A Dictionary defines temptation, in part, as "an inducement; an allurement, esp. to something evil.
In the Glossary in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy, with deep spiritual insight and originality, has defined the words "I, or Ego," as follows ( p. 588 ): "Divine Principle; Spirit; Soul; incorporeal, unerring, immortal, and eternal Mind;" and, amplifying it, she adds in part, "There is but one I, or Us, but one divine Principle, or Mind, governing all existence.
Whatever the present pretenses of evil may be, or however firmly they may seem to bind human society in chains, the Christian Scientist knows that God is supreme, and that His perfect law must continue to lead on the ages. We have it in Scripture that "where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
Christ Jesus said, "I and my Father are one. " Christian Science reveals this oneness of God and man to consist in the fact that man is God's expression, hence is inseparable from Him.
While the ultimate triumph of right over wrong is certain, there is great need at this time for each individual to assume responsibility for his own part in securing peace for the world. Present conditions are a challenge to all right thinking people to arouse themselves to active support of the truth.
On many sides today it is said, in effect, These are changing times, and we hope and pray that, in the end, the change will be for the best, and mankind will be truly benefited. Then, frequently, is added this question: "But how are we to analyze the situation intelligently and accurately; and how are we to dispose of the momentous happenings of the present hour?" In other words, What is the correct answer to the present world problem? On page 255 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy makes this pertinent statement: "Eternal Truth is changing the universe.
One of the most joyous things in the teaching of Christian Science is its insistence upon the omnipotence of good and the powerlessness of evil. Acknowledging God as the fundamental cause of all that really exists, Christian Science places everything that is like Him in the realm of the real; and, correspondingly, whatever is unlike God is seen as a mistake or an unreality.
