The book of Psalms, consisting as it does of one hundred and fifty songs used in the homes of the Hebrews and in their places of worship, may justly be described as "The Hymnal of the Jewish Church," especially since the Hebrew name of the book is tehillim — "hymns. " The book itself and other early records inform us as to certain special occasions on which particular Psalms were used.
Students of Christian Science, trusting Love's healing touch to free them from bondage to materiality, find the true sense of resurrection in the proportion that human belief in and reliance upon material ways and means yield to the understanding of good alone as real. On page 593 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, defines "resurrection" as "spiritualization of thought; a new and higher idea of immortality, or spiritual existence; material belief yielding to spiritual understanding.
In the estimation of the majority, supply seldom involves considerations other than of money and material possessions. To be well supplied, they think, is to own property, securities, a bank account; to be endowed with income, dividends, interest.
A child who had been reared in the comforting teaching of Christian Science became very ill. A practitioner was called to help, but the little one did not respond to treatment at once.
At a time when the people were turning away from God and seeking help from Egypt, the prophet Isaiah voiced the promise, "Thus saith the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength. The term "false claim" is commonly used among Christian Scientists. We often hear it said that someone has overcome the false claim from which he had been suffering.
The teachings of Christian Science are definite and final on the subject of Mind. God is Mind.
A writer living in the tropics of Africa has spoken of the peculiar beauty of the African nights. In Africa, she says, the night, lit by burning stars or tropic moon, is the time for traveling; so one becomes familiar with the constellations and their places in the heavens and with the beauty of the lunar or stellar scene.
There is scarcely a question which is more frequently asked of Christian Scientists than the one, How can man sin, if God has created him perfect? The answer is that the real man cannot sin. But to understand this, one must understand who and what man really is.
The desire to be of service for the good of mankind is deeply embedded in the human heart. To the extent that this desire is motivated by love for God and for mankind it is true prayer.
