Luke tells us that when Jesus was once going to Jerusalem and his way led through Samaria, he sent messengers into a village "to make ready for him. " When the villagers did not receive the Lord "because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem," James and John said to him, "Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?" But Jesus rebuked them and said, "Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.

The familiar words, "Coming events cast their shadows before," may fill one's thought with vague forebodings. Yet, if one pauses to consider that a shadow owes its existence only to obstruction of the light, he may see there is no cause for alarm.

In the study of Christian Science we learn that the struggle of mankind in its journey from sense to Soul is a mental conflict between the thought of existence as mortal and material, and the understanding of existence as purely spiritual. The Master's attitude toward those who crucified him is shown in his prayer, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. " This sets forth for us an example which is worthy of emulation, and which should silence excuse-making on the part of those who would avoid complying with the requirements of true forgiveness.

The great Master, Christ Jesus, once took a little child and placing it beside him said, "Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great. " The disciples had been disputing among themselves who should be accounted the greatest; they were allowing themselves to be mesmerized by the aggressive suggestions of pride, jealousy, and self-aggrandizement, which certainly have no place in spiritualized thinking.

Many words of vital import to all humanity were spoken by the loved teacher, Christ Jesus, as he conversed with his devoted disciples. On one occasion he warned the disciples against hypocrisy, covetousness, and worldliness, and discoursed on the heavenly kingdom, awakening them to the perception of divine realities.

Through the ages men have been prone to rely upon their own individual efforts and initiative to meet difficult situations recurring in human experience. In fact, one accustomed with some success to facing these difficulties is referred to as a self-reliant person.

It becomes increasingly apparent to students of Christian Science that a clear recognition of true identity, as Science reveals it, is essential for spiritual growth. Christian Science reveals man as spiritual and perfect, as the son of God.

In the Gospel of Matthew it is recorded that one day Jesus was followed by two blind men who cried to him to have mercy on them. Not having been able to approach him, they did not hesitate to follow him into the house where he went.
