An inspiring picture is given us in the fourth chapter of Luke's Gospel, where it is recorded of Jesus: "Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them." Can we not catch the vision of the Master as he waits patiently while the multitude seeks his services in healing the sick and suffering? It does not take a great stretch of the imagination to see the weary ones as they approach the Teacher, or to visualize the transforming joy diffusing their countenances as they leave after receiving their healing. A light more beautiful than that of the setting sun illumined the thoughts of this throng when they glimpsed the goodness of God, as manifested by Jesus, and, gaining a higher view of Life, received new courage and confidence with which to meet adverse conditions, renewed strength and vigor with which to carry on their daily tasks. The picture inspires the student of Christian Science because it reminds him that every hour Christ, Truth, is waiting to heal the sick, the distraught, the discouraged, the disheartened, who turn to Spirit.
That the marvelous works of healing performed by the Way-shower were not the result of blind faith, but the result of a method which all Christians should understand and practice, is the earnest contention of our Leader. By method is meant an orderly procedure. A teacher of mathematics might work out a mathematical problem on the blackboard for the benefit of a class of pupils. If the problem were very complicated, the process might appear difficult to them; however, any member of the class who understood the rules could work out the problem. This illustrates the use of divine law which Jesus brought into operation in the healing of sin and disease. On this subject Mrs. Eddy, on page 456 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," states, "Strict adherence to the divine Principle and rules of the scientific method has secured the only success of the students of Christian Science."
Adherence to divine Principle implies disciplined thinking, thinking that is based upon the standard of perfect God and perfect man. One of the most important points to remember in this connection is that God, divine Principle, is infinite good, and that good is not, therefore, a personal attribute. Good is not something that, by nature, some people possess, while others do not, as the false evidence of the physical senses would lead us to believe. On the contrary, God, good, being divine Principle, all can know Him as ever present and available. All may understand the laws of God, or good, and demonstrate this knowledge by expressing health and joy.
