OBEDIENCE

From the February 1940 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christ Jesus said to his disciples, "If ye love me, keep my commandments." And in reply to the lawyer's question concerning "the great commandment in the law," Jesus replied: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."

Our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, pointedly declares in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 117), "Obedience is the offspring of Love; and Love is the Principle of unity, the basis of all right thinking and acting; it fulfils the law." Only as we love are we obedient. Only as we live in strict obedience to the law of Love are we true followers of Christ Jesus, true Christian Scientists.

Obedience to these two commandments demands consecration, self-forgetfulness. unselfishness, humility, singleness of purpose and desire, willingness to work for God.
