One of Michael Crawford's "animal magnetism" cartoons in The New Yorker some time ago, made me do a double take. Originally, I'd heard the term animal magnetism in a Christian Science Sunday School when I was a teenager.

When I first heard that my husband and I would be moving to Boston, I thought someone might as well ask me to move to Mars. It wasn't that we lived that far away from the city geographically, but the mental distance from the suburbs to a large city seemed huge.
Most of us belong to several communities—the one where we live, the place where we work, and maybe a different town where we go to church or engage in other meaningful activities. How we interact with those communities can make a big difference to them and to us.
I went to a big school , and we played a lot of college baseball games every year. Toward the middle of one season, we had a game with a well-known rival school in California.
