The Bible cites two incidents where the disciples, while fishing, had been unable to catch anything until Christ Jesus arrived on the scene and instructed them on what to do. A few years ago I volunteered at the local elementary school, working with children who were having difficulty learning to read. The teacher gave me simple stories, and the children were to read them for me over and over, so that they mastered the stories and gained confidence in their reading abilities.

In an age when most church congregations across denominations are reportedly dwindling, my wife and I were grateful to find a Christian Science church open for a Sunday service during a recent trip to Illinois from our hometown in Texas. While talking to two church members in Illinois who belong to different branches of The Mother Church—The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston—I thanked them sincerely for their service and for keeping the doors open despite their relatively small congregations.
We prefer precision. We want to know what time our plane flight takes off, the location of our next meeting, who our next schoolteacher will be.
