Testimonies of Healing
In 1966 my husband passed on, and I was left to continue on with two loving and understanding children. I was sustained beautifully by the love expressed by family and friends, and it seemed as though for weeks and months the Christian Science periodicals were written especially for me, for every one I picked up to read had a message to comfort me.
I became a Christian Scientist in 1980. I was a Presbyterian before that, and I'm grateful for the Christian understanding I gained from that background.
My husband and I arrived at the hospital for the birth of our first child at noon. Before we left home, we had contacted all involved parties: a Christian Science practitioner, a state-certified nurse midwife, and a Christian Science nurse.
Recently on a Wednesday evening at our branch church service we heard readings about the transforming nature of the teachings of Christian Science. As a result I was reminded of a healing for which I want to give thanks here, as it initiated transformation of thought in our family.
For several years, I found myself challenged at work—the staff was drawn to gossip, criticism, and disrespect for both employers and other employees. For quite some time, it was hard just to be there.
I want to express my thanks for the joy, healing, and closeness to God that have been mine through Christian Science. My earliest remembrances are of God being as present as a playmate.
I was the child in the testimony. I can't imagine anyone thinking my parents were negligent.
Growing up in a Christian Scientist family, I learned to turn to God for healing in any trouble. If my own prayers failed to bring healing, I turned to my mother, my grandmother, or Christian Science practitioners.
Just recently I had an experience that I now realise proves the truth of the statement "Trials are proofs of God's care" ( Science and Health , p. 66 ).
I was in bed, not feeling well at all. When Mom came home, she came to me.
