"NEW PUBLICATIONS."

From the July 1885 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Under the above heading, The Traveller of June 9th reviews a late work by Dr. Morton Prince, entitled, "The Nature of Mind and of Human Automatism." The reviewer says: "Dr. Prince comes forward in this book, and proposes to pluck out the heart of the mystery, and present that which all philosophers have hitherto, without exception, confessed their inability to offer." Then he quotes from this very late work a passage in proof of its being the "first time in the history of metaphysical literature that any philosopher has felt an entire conviction that he has grasped the elusive secret of the universe: "—"Instead of there being one substance with two properties or aspects,—mind and motion,— there is one substance, Mind." This is "his theorem, which it is the effort of his book to prove." But readers of "Science and Health," published ten years ago, remembering the Scientific statement of Being,—"All is mind, there is no matter."—" It is only by knowing there are not two, mind and matter,"—"Mind is the only substance," bearing also in mind the authoritative attitude of the author of that startling statement on the question of "grasping the elusive secret of the universe," will feel that justice has not been done the pioneer in the field of pure metaphysics, if some one does not refer the admiring commentator to the original work on metaphysics—Science and Health, by Mary B. Eddy, covering all the topics under Dr. Prince's consideration.
