LOVE'S BEHEST

From the March 1886 issue of The Christian Science Journal

As a rule, humanity is ever reaching beyond the mortal standpoint of order and condition, after something whereon to rest its hope, in permanent security and peace. We shall find this basis as we turn away from the things of earth, denying all the claims of personal sense, and seek for "the kingdom of God and His righteousness." Through Truth, when understood, the spiritual, eternal verities of Being appear to conscious sense, in covenant with Soul, which holds itself in everlasting union with the Divine, enabling us to "put off the old man, with his deeds,"—this belief of life and intelligence in matter,—"and put on the new man, which, after God, is created in righteousness and true holiness," thus rising into the clear consciousness of spiritual Life and health, as the only reality and expression of harmony. This "new birth," awakening us to the sense of blissful existence, is the command of Love, and awaits the experience of every human being, calling loudly for prompt and vigorous action; whereby we may receive it through Jesus the Way, the only means of Love's providing,—his career, teachings, and demonstrations having been again revealed, that we may follow in Truth's footsteps, as revealed in Christian Science. The question is before us, "Shall he find faith on the earth?"

So let us build our lives aright,
With stories of beauty and of Truth;
Let fair proportions greet His sight,
Not blackening shades and forms uncouth.
