UNDERSTANDING THE SCRIPTURES

That thou mightest know the certainty of those things wherein thou hast been instructed. Luke. i. 4.

This is part of Luke's introduction to his biography of Jesus, which he addressed especially to his friend Theophilus.

To rightly interpret any passage, we must first be reasonably sure—either from personal knowledge or from reliable testimony—that we have the meaning of the Hebrew or Greek words in which the Scriptures were written.
