Smoking

From the January 1887 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In a recent lecture before the Y. M. C. A. of Brooklyn, N. Y., Dr. E. P. Thwing, in an interesting and instructive address, made the following points, viz:

1st. Tobacco using is uncleanly, making the breath, clothes, books and apartments offensive.

2nd. It is injurious, tending to insanity, paralysis and cancer. Its poison penetrates the whole system.

3rd. It is costly; government statistics show that $350,000,000 are wasted on this vice in a year, far more than what is spent for bread. Vast losses by fire are caused by the sparks and matches of smokers.

4th. It is a sin against conscience and God inasmuch as it is thus useless, harmful, dirty, wasteful, and even if it does not at present injure the user, it inflicts injnry on the coming generations.

The doctor also gave some vivid portrayals of fatal instances of the use of tobacco.
