GOD AS TRUTH

From the January 1887 issue of The Christian Science Journal

May it never depart from our consciousness!

God as Truth, in contradistinction to error. Truth eternal, error temporal. Truth a reality, error unreal. Truth good, error bad. Truth, when confronted with its opposite, which is a lie, remains; but what of the lie? It disappears. Why? Because it is unreal. It has no foundation, no place or state; it is shown to be a nonentity: a lie sustains no more relation to truth than darkness does to light; darkness is unreal, and light proves the fact; so also does truth prove error or a lie to be unreal. Truth takes no cognizance of error, because it disappears in the light of Truth as absolutely as darkness disappears in the sunlight. Remove the light, what appears? The unthoughtful might say that darkness appears; but it does not; it is but the absence of light. Just so is a lie the absence of Truth, and becomes nothing, as Truth appears and is understood. We thus learn that darkness and error are unreal, and Truth takes no cognizance thereof.

There was once a Light which shone in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not; neither did the darkness disappear, because they upon whom the light of Divine Truth shone did not believe, which was, and is, the first requisite to receive it. Thus the Jews, and many others upon whom this light has shone, are still in the shadow of darkness because of their unbelief; but not so with the believer, who understands God as Truth, and is seeking for the light; upon such it will shine brighter and brighter till the perfect day.
