MORALITY AND SCIENCE

From the January 1887 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Listening to the remarks of one who declared that "Christian Science contradicted the moral teachings of the Bible, and opposed the teaching and work of Jesus," evoked the following query: Why this apparent difference in regard to the teachings of the Scriptures?

The question, then, that concerns this article, resolved itself thus: Does Christian Science contradict, or even disturb, a moral sense of the Scriptures, by opposing an obedience to its commandments?

The Bible is received in its Scriptural teachings by the Christian Scientist from a moral and spiritual standpoint only. If, then, we do not oppose the fulfilling of the moral and spiritual purposes of the Scriptures, we need not exercise any anxiety as to the ultimate of the literal or physical rendering of the same. While Christian Science seeks to lead humanity away from a physical and material conception of morality, or immorality, away from the sensual and erring, upward, to a spiritual apprehension of God and man, to a spiritual sense that is in perfect accord with a moral sense, it insists upon the attainment of this only by a strict observance of the moral law, as it is spiritually defined in the Scriptures. How does the Christian of the present age receive the coming of Jesus Christ? Surely, not in a physical personality, although taught to look upon the historical Christ in the person. There is no dispute of his coming, a man, presenting in himself a two-fold nature, fulfilling the moral and spiritual law, in direct opposition to all literal and material protestations of the Christian Jews.
