I have witnessed many beautiful demonstrations of Christian Science. One that was instantaneous brought so much peace to me, and was a means of so much help to others that I will tell it. When our Leader's instruction came to us concerning the treatment of contagious diseases, there was quite a little discussion as to how such conditions should be met. I was asked what I should do. I answered that it was a matter for individual demonstration, as we had no business to be touched with mortal-mind contagion.
About two weeks after, I was called up on the telephone by one of our brother Scientists, who said he wished I would treat his wife, who seemed to have diphtheria. I had heard the lady who needed help say that her niece was taken to the hospital with malignant diphtheria, so I answered that I would call and see her. I then realized that I had a demonstration to make, for the thought of contagion had touched me, and I saw that if I meant to be obedient to my higher sense of duty, I must tell her when I called that I could not treat her and she must therefore do her own work. I realized that before going to see her I must destroy my own sense of contagion. When I had finished my mental work I attended to some necessary household duties, with a sense of peace, and I then went to see the dear one, and tell her what our Leader's counsel meant to me.
When I arrived she met me at the door, with the tears of gratitude and happiness shining in her eyes. She was perfectly well, all evidence of disease was destroyed by Truth, although she had been struggling with the error several days.
