When I read the many expressions of gratitude in the Christian Science periodicals,—Journal, Sentinel, and Herold,—from which I have received so much benefit, I feel that I am led to send in a few words to express my thanks for the many blessings which have come to me through Christian Science as taught in the writings of Mary Baker G. Eddy.
About eleven years ago, I heard the words Christian Science for the first time in connection with two ladies who had been the means of healing many that were sick. My interest was at first awakened when I heard that they administered no medicine, but that the healing was effected through the efficacy of prayer. Some time later, I heard that one of those ladies held weekly meetings in her home, and that I would be welcomed there.
At this meeting, I heard them read for the first time from Science and Health. Although at that time I understood very little English I attended these meetings regularly, and with the little that I could understand, I went home strengthened and encouraged. The desire to have such a book grew stronger, and I sent for one. The reading of Science and Health was at first very slow work, because I was compelled to have a dictionary in hand all the time. After having studied every spare moment, evenings and Sundays, in this way for almost four years, my effort was crowned with success, for I could read and understand the "little book" and other English literature without a dictionary.
