Eight years ago I suffered with cramp, also from choking sensation. Seven doctors were called in, and none could tell the name of my trouble or give me relief. Then we thought best to go to California, and while there consulted seven other physicians. For four months I was confined to my bedroom, was not allowed to go out or dress myself. After doctoring two years, we came to Portland, Ore. When we arrived I was not able to walk two blocks. We then consulted other physicians, and after a long and trying experience the trouble was pronounced gallstones, and I was told that the only thing to help me was an operation at a hospital.
For seven months gallstones passed away, and new ones continued to come. One day a gentleman came into our store and seeing me sick said. "Why don't you try Christian Science?" This was the first time I had ever heard of Christian Science. He gave me the address of a practitioner, also a copy of Christian Science Sentinel, and said, "Read that and see if you can't find something that will give you some light on this subject." Having been brought up in France, and not being able to read English, I could not understand it. In about two hours my husband came in, I told him about this strange man and paper, and he read some of it and said, "It is a humbug,—nothing in it." After a while he said, "If you like you can go and see the practitioner, if it does you no good it can't hurt you." I decided to go and see the Christian Scientist right away. I did not believe he could do me any good, but after talking a few moments, I said I would try it, and asked him to give me a treatment now. After the treatment he said, "Go home and eat the same food that your husband eats." I said, "If I choke to-night shall I call you?" and he said, "You will not have to call me, you will not choke. God is caring for you now." When I reached home at six o'clock, I said, "I will have supper with you," and I ate a hearty meal consisting of potatoes, beefsteak, apple-pie, bread and butter, and everything tasted good after seven months of fasting. I went to bed and slept all night. Next morning I was hungry, could hardly wait for breakfast, and now for two years I have eaten anything I wish without discomfort. After fifteen treatments, I bought a copy of Science and Health, written by Mary Baker G. Eddy, and with its perfect light I could in two weeks' time read from it intelligently. I was joyful, for I did not expect so much or such quick results. I weighed one hundred and twenty pounds two years ago, and now I weigh one hundred and ninety pounds. I work hard at the store and do my housework. I now love to work. For all these good things and for the book Science and Health, the Science of the Christ, sent into this world to save me and all who come to the fountain of Life, I thank Mrs. Eddy.
