Lately these words have been coming to me with much force, "A just acknowledgment of Truth, and what it has done for us, is an effectual help" (Science and Health, p. 372). It is now a little over two years since this truth came to us and I gladly testify to the healing of many physical troubles.
In October, 1901, I stepped off one stair in going into the cellar, turned the ankle, and received an injury to the ankle joint. Little attention was paid to it, although very painful and much swollen, until the third day, when I called in our physician's assistant, our physician being out of town.
He advised me to keep off the foot as much as possible and to use ice cold bandages, but in a few days these were changed to very hot ones, as the extreme cold did not bring relief. After using the hot compress for about a week, without result, lotions of many kinds were used for a week or two, the foot and leg as far as the knee, being kept bandaged, but without result. A plaster cast was then put on which extended to the knee, and it was thought the leg would be normal when that was removed but when the cast was taken off it was found that the leg had swollen to the knee, had become purple and very tender. A surgeon was called in and cauterizing begun; during this torture an. old nervous trouble reappeared, and was so bad that the pain in the leg became secondary. Our regular physician was sent for, and it was decided that I should go to one of our city hospitals the cauterizing continuing and the nervous condition becoming more alarming.
