Testimonies of Healing

Like many others I sought Christian Science for relief...

From the November 1904 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Like many others I sought Christian Science for relief from physical disabilities. For years I had suffered from nervousness which was attributed to my occupation, that of bookkeeping. Drugs did not overcome this difficulty, in fact did not even relieve it, and physicians would always recommend rest and a change of air. Each year this trouble seemed to become more aggravated, and I commenced to look forward to my annual vacations to bring the desired relief. About seven years ago I was so much worse than I ever had been, that I was completely discouraged. I consulted a physician, and he recommended out-of-door exercise and a tonic, but as this did not help my condition any, he said that a rest of a couple of months in a quiet place would completely restore my health. I was granted a leave of absence for that length of time, and while I was much better at the expiration of the two months, I felt that the disease was not destroyed, and it so proved, for upon resuming my work the old conditions returned.

When the following spring came, business changes had increased my work and responsibilities, and I felt that I was on the verge of nervous prostration. A leave of absence seemed impossible, and I knew that drugs were powerless to help me. I did not feel that I could resign my position and I did not know which way to turn. Then Christian Science was suggested to me, but I had always ridiculed what I thought it was, and said that I did not want to have anything to do with it. But at last, hearing of a case which it had healed, I decided to give it a trial.

I remember so well the first remark I made to the practitioner namely, that I had no faith in Christian Science, and I was not a little surprised when she replied in a very kindly Christian way. This first visit will always stand out in my memory as one of the sweetest experiences of my life, for from that time I found not only much to live and work for, but also the hope of relief from suffering. I was not healed immediately, and for that I have been very thankful, for I soon began to learn how to overcome many difficulties myself. Had the help come more quickly, I think I should have been satisfied with my healing and not have wished for anything more. But health came gradually and gently, and I soon found the peace which I had longed for. That year I had no vacation and was able to lay aside glasses which I had worn almost constantly for about two years.
