"Thou shalt have no other gods before me."
How little I had understood the importance of this the first of the Ten Commandments, I found out in 1899, when I began to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."
Since 1894 I had tried all kinds of remedies to be relieved from an almost unbearable stomach trouble, but in vain. Every excitement affected me to such an extent that I often suffered for weeks and was unable to do any work. I was afraid to eat any food because it caused me more pain. At last I had malaria, which made me still more miserable. A specialist informed me that there was hope for me to be freed from this trouble after some years. This decision was not very encouraging,— to suffer for such a length of time and then, perhaps, be cured!
