The healing of the sick is now largely acknowledged...

From the January 1906 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THE healing of the sick is now largely acknowledged and accepted as the legitimate outcome of the teachings of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and it is interesting to note in the great number of testimonies of healing through Christian Science which come to us for publication, there are many in which the healing has been the direct result of reading this textbook, for the history of Science and Health records that ever since its publication the sick have been healed by it; and this healing is one of the most tangible proofs that Christian Science is the truth. The mission of Jesus is no longer minimized to include only the hope of a far-away salvation to be won after death, for this book has proclaimed to the world that the Master's command to preach the gospel and heal the sick is indivisible, and it has shown how this command can be obeyed.

In every issue of the Journal and of the Christian Science Sentinel a number of such cases are reported, and unnumbered cases of healing through the application of the teaching of this book have been recorded. Yet Mrs. Eddy's place as a benefactor of the race does not rest solely upon the fact that thousands of persons have been healed of bodily sickness by this book: the testimony is overwhelming that through the study of Science and Health men and women have been redeemed from the enslavement of sin and that they have turned from agnosticism and infidelity to the understanding and worship of God and His Christ. Many who are cognizant of the physical healing are not so well informed regarding the reforming and spiritualizing effect which the teachings of this book have had upon a large number who had drifted away from their faith in God and to whom the Bible had become a closed book. Nor do they know of the number of copies of the "Book of books" which have been rescued from the obscure shelves and corners to which they had been consigned.

A few extracts from testimonies of healing published in recent issues of the Journal, covering this phase of Christian Science, will be instructive to those who have not been impressed with the evangelistic results which have accompanied Mrs. Eddy's ministry. A man who has been healed of nervous prostration writes, "Before my healing I was a pronounced skeptic on religious matters, and though for appearances' sake a Bible was allowed to remain in my home, it was never read. Now it is in daily use, and through its spiritual interpretation, revealed by our Leader, I am gaining wondrous knowledge." A lady who was healed of a spinal trouble complicated by other diseases, writes, "What it [Christian Science] has done for me physically is but a shadow of the benefits received spiritually." Another man, who testifies that he "was healed of a physical ailment of many years' standing," writes, "It is, however, for the spiritual healing that I am particularly thankful."
