For a long time I have felt that I must give my testimony and tell what God in His goodness has done for me. When I was a child nine years old I had an illness which left me with spinal trouble. I was treated by several physicians and specialists, and spent ten weeks in the hospital at Neuchatel, Switzerland, my native place. In 1893, after my arrival in America, I was married, and in 1895 my son was born. After that time my health failed, and when my child was two and a half years old I was suddenly taken very ill. We called a physician, who, after treating me a while, said there was an abnormal growth and spinal trouble. It was but a short time after this that I became unable to walk or even sit up. Heart trouble manifested itself among the many other diseases with which I was afflicted. This condition grew worse for seven and a half years, and no tongue can tell what I suffered in those years. I was unable to hold my head up any more than a" new-born babe, could only retain a little liquid food, and was practically helpless.
In September, 1904, when I was terribly emaciated and was having spasms several times a day, Christian Science was presented to me. After my first treatment I never had another spasm. One disease after another was overcome by this divine truth, and on Jan. 1, 1905, I sat up long enough to have the Lesson-Sermon read. After this time I was up a little every day, my strength increasing until I was able to walk to the door with a crutch and see the blessed sunshine of spring once more — the first time in eight years.
In June I sailed for Switzerland, still using one crutch, with no one to help me but my little boy — and God, good. Soon after my arrival at my old home, I met some friends who had known of my long illness and were greatly surprised to see me among the living. On hearing of my healing, they wanted to know more of this wondrous truth. Very soon they accepted it, and began the study of English so they could read Science and Health. We spent several weeks at their home, studying constantly, and it was during this time that I laid aside the crutch and gained very rapidly. I also had the great privilege of visiting the Scientists in Geneva and attending the services. The first of November my husband joined me in Switzerland, and together we came back to America the last of January, 1906. He also has accepted Christian Science, and not a drop of medicine has been used in our home since my first treatment.
