Testimonies of Healing

Four years ago those beautiful words, Christian Science...

From the February 1906 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Four years ago those beautiful words, Christian Science, fell on my ears for the first time, and within four months thereafter the truth, as revealed in Science and Health, had removed scars from my eyes, resulting from twenty years of painful disease, which seemed to be culminating in blindness. Through fear of this my general health was in a very bad state, fast sinking into the many ills of nervous prostration. I had the best medical care obtainable all those years, but each attack left me in a worse condition, and the specialist whom I was then consulting gave me very little hope of recovery of sight. After some explanation of Christian Science I was able to read Science and Health a few minutes at a time. I was then staying in London and had the privilege of attending services at First Church, receiving much loving help from some of the earnest workers I met there. As the light of Truth gradually dawned on my consciousness, my sight improved and physical weakness gave place to health; but my new joy led me into the indiscretion of trying to persuade every one I met to share it with me, and in the following year the eye trouble reappeared, in a lessened degree. I then sought the aid of a practitioner, who patiently and lovingly guided my feeble steps, and afterwards through study my feet were planted on a firmer basis. While the struggle has sometimes seemed severe, and mistakes hard to overcome, I now rejoice in complete restoration of sight and strength. I have come to know that "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning." Though as yet I seem to have made no big demonstration for others, I have found the holding fast to Truth and Love so sure a preventive that the various claims of sickness, which used to keep us in a constant state of anxiety about our children, have been met and overcome in the early symptoms, while the application of the truth solves all the little problems that find place in the daily routine.

More beautiful even than the physical healing is the peace that has come into my life, the harmony of Love for the sense of discord which formerly seemed so insurmountable. I am most thankful to God for opening my eyes to His omnipresence and omnipotence, and for the outpouring of divine Love, revealed through the writings of our beloved Leader. As I ponder and try to use each word she prophetically sends forth for our guidance, my lips are incapable of adequate expression of thanks, but I feel that the voiceless gratitude of every effort to follow humbly in the way she has opened up, is an added ray in the sunlight of love that shines on her path to-day. At present I am living in a town where Christian Science seems to be unknown and unwelcome, but I am blest with opportunities to study, wait, and work for the approach to the standard to which Mrs. Eddy points in her sublime message to the church at Concord. "To live so as to keep human consciousness in constant relation with the divine, the spiritual, and eternal," and so to become fitted to help others in God's own time and way.
