THE FULFILMENT OF PROPHECY

From the February 1906 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Some have said they do not believe that Christian Science is the truth, because there are no prophecies in the Bible concerning it. They admit its healing virtue, but consider it a human agency. Such an opinion can only be held because of an unwillingness to investigate Christian Science, for this would show it to be the fulfilment of prophecy. This same attitude of thought was abroad in the land when the meek Nazarene went about teaching and healing. The Pharisees said, "He casteth out devils by Beelzebub, the prince of devils." The people would not accept him as the promised Messiah, even though they had every proof, because he did not come as they thought he should come,—a mighty king, with pomp and political authority, but on the contrary rebuked their time-honored beliefs and customs; hence it is not strange that the "second coming" should be obscured for those who look for a material manifestation of the Christ, a descent from visible clouds.

It was two thousand years from Adam, at a time when mankind had sunk to a low ebb spiritually, having lost sight of the true idea of God and having abandoned themselves to the worship of idols, — gods that are "no gods," — that Abraham, having been spiritually awakened, turned from worshiping the idols of the Chaldees to the one God, who led him out of the land of his fathers into Canaan, which He gave unto him and his seed. Here Abraham set up the standard of Truth as he perceived it, and it became incorporated into the lives of his descendants for many generations.

During the two thousand years that followed there were many prophecies concerning a more perfect revelation, which were fulfilled in the life and teachings of our blessed Master, whom the world rejected, but whose teachings still live among us, — a mighty spiritual force. It took the world all these years to get ready for this wonderful revelation, this marvelous impersonation of Truth, which was brought forth by the virgin purity of Mary's exalted spirituality, and many did not then receive him; even those who did receive him could not understand his higher teachings, as he himself declared. So it came to pass that two thousand years more had to elapse before the world could truly perceive the purpose of his divine mission, and understand those higher things of which Christ Jesus spoke. These are now fully revealed to mankind through "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, which interprets Jesus' words and works, and reveals "the Comforter" that he said would testify of him and lead into all truth. This inspired book is now in its three hundred and eightieth edition of one thousand copies each, and is spreading the truth over the world so rapidly that it is not impossible that even before A.D. 2000 the prophecy in Habakkuk may be fulfilled: "For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea."
