From early childhood I was unable to go through a summer...

From the January 1907 issue of The Christian Science Journal

From early childhood I was unable to go through a summer season without a severe illness accompanied by great suffering. I had many physicians and all that any of them could do to relieve me was to administer morphine in large quantities. As the years went by the suffering increased, and still larger quantities of the drug were used. At one time a relative spoke to me about Christian Science, but it seemed to me to be most absurd to think of any one's getting along without medicine, although I had found none to help me. I had employed over thirty doctors, many of them being considered eminent.

In the spring of 1890 I took to my bed, never expecting to get up again. I then learned there was a Christian Science practitioner in our town, and for six months I had a desire for the treatment. When this desire was expressed she was sent for, and in less than a half hour after her arrival, I was greatly benefited, and in three days was able to arise and dress myself. I did not, however, continue the treatment after I could get around, and in six months I again called for help, with the same result as before. I saw that Christian Science was the truth which I had longed for from childhood, other religions having failed to satisfy me; but I hesitated to attempt the working out of my own salvation and resorted to surgery, which physicians had claimed was very necessary. It was resorted to several times, one operation being very severe, but they all failed to cure, and my desire was to die. I tried to leave off the morphine habit five different times, and was for several days and nights without sleep. All that money and skill could do had been done, and I was still a great sufferer While lying in a hospital at Portland, Me., I received very little encouragement; they afterward told me that they thought I could live but a few days. I, however, remained there nine weeks and then was carried to my home in a dreadful condition, both mentally and physically, and remained in this condition for seven months. '

My husband then called a Christian Science practitioner and I was healed in less than three weeks, manifesting a better mental condition than I had for years. I had one present treatment, the rest being absent. The last physician employed offered to give me a testimonial that nothing else could have healed me but Christian Science. Through the study of Science and Health and the help of a practitioner, I have also been healed of liver and kidney trouble, and other ailments.
