In 1896 I was healed through the power of Christian Science, after having spent much money and submitted to experimental treatment by many physicians in eastern and western cities for a period of over fifteen years, during which time I was a sufferer from what was diagnosed as a serious kidney trouble. In these years of suffering I was subject to attacks of such severe pain that the attending physician always prescribed a hypodermic injection of morphine. These attacks finally became so frequent that they seriously interfered with my business and the ordinary comforts of life, until I reached a place where I felt that something must be done. I had been a resident of Salt Lake City, Utah, for several years, and from time to time had been under treatment of three prominent physicians. With a view of getting at the seat of my trouble, I called a council of physicians, who made a thorough examination. They advised an operation, and said I could not otherwise expect to recover.
I had always been more or less prejudiced against Christian Science, though I knew absolutely nothing of it, but acting on the advice of friends, I now submitted to its treatment. At the time I began I had been having my severest attacks of pain as often as twice a week, and for years had not gone longer than a month without one of them, but it was six months after my first treatment before I had one of these attacks. I was then in Kansas City, on my way to New York, and was awakened about four o'clock in the morning by the intense pain. When the gentleman with whom I was stopping was called, he, knowing my trouble, without asking any questions telephoned for a doctor, and when he arrived I submitted to the usual morphine treatment. I was confined to my room for three days; then went on to Chicago, where I had another attack, with similar results. I knew, however, that I had been greatly benefited by Christian Science treatment, and when I finally reached New York I called on a practitioner with whom I was acquainted, and asked for treatment. I wished to make an appointment for a fixed time each day when I might call, but she told me to make no plans for to-morrow, that I had a right to expect to be healed then and there; and so I was. I was healed with that treatment, and the soreness from which I had not been free for years passed off in a few weeks. For years I had not been able to eat a hearty meal or take any vigorous exercise without being laid up in bed for three or four days. After my first treatment in Christian Science I commenced to eat what I desired, without any bad effects. I have since taken up Christian Science as a study, and for nine years have enjoyed the best of health.
At the time I took up Christian Science, and for years previous, my wife had been a great sufferer, and was almost constantly under a doctor's care, but when I discarded all my material remedies, she gave up her medicine, and through my healing and the reading of the Christian Science literature her health was restored. The total cost for all my treatment did not exceed twenty-five dollars. We have since learned that Christian Science is not only good for physical troubles, but is applicable to every phase of discord, and in social and business affairs as well.
