In March, 1901, when fifty-nine years of age, I was taken to a hospital, where two physicians pronounced my case a severe form of rheumatic trouble. While I was in the hospital one doctor was in daily attendance, and two others studied my case with him. The usual baking, ice packing, and other treatments were tried, as well as numerous internal remedies. The physicians finally decided it was impossible to help me, and since it was "only a question of time," they thought I would be more comfortable in my daughter's home, where she could give me constant care, and I was taken there the latter part of June the same year. At this time it was impossible for me to turn in bed; the whole limb was badly affected, and the pain was intense. I heard of Christian Science about three weeks after leaving the hospital, and in a few days began the treatment. I also began the reading of the Christian Science text-book. The treatment continued two months before I was able to turn in bed, but I had less pain and was able to sleep, which had previously been almost impossible. The next improvement was being able to rise alone and to walk with two crutches, later with one crutch, and in about eighteen months from the first treatment I walked without any assistance, being able to get on and off cars, go up and down stairs, etc. At first the treatment was continued for about three months., when the practitioner thought that through my own study of the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, I would be able to complete the healing without additional treatments on her part. This I tried, but again asked for help four months later. This time the treatment was continued about six weeks, with favorable results, when I again took up my own case, studying the Bible and the Christian Science literature daily. The medical treatment and the hospital expenses had been paid by relatives, but as they were not willing to pay for the Christian Science treatment, the practitioner made no charge.
At this writing I am sixty-three years of age. Before taking the Christian Science treatment I was helpless and dependent. Now I do all kinds of housework, including washing and ironing for my family of three. I am able to walk without any pain, and the limb which was deformed is now normal.—Syracuse, N. Y.
