About thirteen years ago I was suffering from a badly diseased limb, the condition having been seemingly brought about by a severe bruise. For two years after the accident the limb pained me a great deal, but there was no visible sign of a diseased condition till about the end of that period, when I found that the painful spot appeared to be decayed. A San Francisco physician operated on it, and soon afterwards the diseased condition extended over the limb, which presented a dreadful appearance. I was taking large doses of an opiate every night to induce sleep, and it then seemed as if amputation would be the only way to get rid of the trouble. At this juncture I made the acquaintance of a Christian Scientist, who lovingly offered to take me to her home and treat me. I had never heard of any cases of healing by this method and had a very hazy idea of what it was, but I was perfectly willing to try it. Upon commencing treatment the opiates were laid aside without a struggle, the pain and soreness yielding at once. In two weeks I walked several miles without the slightest inconvenience. All this time the appearance of the limb grew steadily worse, so bad indeed that my dear friend, the practitioner, decided to change the cloths on it herself, because I was so much affected by the evidence of disease that the picture was deeply impressed upon my thought. Accordingly she turned the case over to another practitioner, and I never can be sufficiently grateful to these two Scientists, who worked so faithfully for me without remuneration, for I had been unable to earn anything more than a pittance for a long time on account of my unfortunate condition. In about five months time the limb began to mend, the disease having been overcome by metaphysical treatment alone, and I made up my mind I could go to work, which I did, working very hard and being on my feet nearly all day long. None but those few who knew, suspected what I was carrying around on my body. At the expiration of eight months the healing was complete; the limb gradually filled out and assumed its normal contour. It has stayed healed and has been as strong as before I had this experience.
This is only one of many demonstrations that have been made for me and that I have made for myself, but I speak of this one because it was through it I found that the day of miracles (so called) has not passed. It is a privilege, a joy, and a comfort to have my questions answered in Christian Science. As a child I had rebelled at the old theological teaching, and at the early age of sixteen gave myself up to infidelity, but through Mrs. Eddy's teachings I have caught a glimpse of the glorious Principle that "changeth not and causeth no evil, disease, nor death" (Science and Health, p. 140).
