It is with a grateful heart that I want to tell what Christian Science has done for me. Four years ago I was taken with a severe nervous illness, according to the physicians' statement. I suffered very much with sleeplessness, pains in the back, and oppression of the heart, and was afraid of dying or becoming insane at any time. I was so ill that I was unable to attend to my duties as a telegrapher, and it was predicted that I would probably never be able to take them up again. After having been treated unsuccessfully by the physicians for seven weeks, I lost all faith in medical skill and medicine. Good friends then advised me to apply to a magnetic healer, but when he too declared with a shrug of his shoulders that I was mentally deranged, I lost all hope of human help.
On the day of my confirmation the clergyman had given me this Bible text: "And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive." These words had never left me entirely, and in my greatest need I remembered them. I prayed to God and committed myself into God's hands. Soon after, I heard of Christian Science, applied to a practitioner, and after the first talk I had with her I knew that God had answered my prayer. After the first treatment sleep, which had completely left me for seven weeks, returned. I immediately resumed my post, with the conviction that God would supply the strength needed for the work.
My healing was very slow; it took about three years; but I knew that Christian Science is the truth and that it would heal me if I followed its teachings patiently and faithfully. During that time I brought myself to read the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and came to love it. Often, during uneasy nights, I would read our text-book, and within half an hour would find my peace and go to sleep quietly. Now I am free from all the troubles I have mentioned, and from others as well. I am very grateful for the Herald, as well as for the other Christian Science periodicals; they have been a great help to me in times of need, and are now my favorite reading. Christian Science has taught me to love life, for which I am grateful with all my heart.
